Vape Maintenance 101 — Keep Your Device Running Like New

Learn how to clean your vape, when to replace coils, how to fix common problems, and tips to make your device last longer and taste better.

Why Maintenance Matters

A well-maintained vape tastes better, lasts longer, and works reliably. A neglected vape tastes like burnt cotton, leaks everywhere, and dies at the worst possible moment. The good news? Basic maintenance takes five minutes and makes a massive difference.

Know Your Device Type

Maintenance depends on what you're using:

  • Disposables — No maintenance. Use it until it's empty, then replace it. That's the whole section.
  • Pod systems (refillable) — Light maintenance. Replace pods and keep contacts clean.
  • Box mods with tanks — More maintenance. Regular coil changes, cleaning, and occasional part replacement.
  • Pod System Maintenance

    When to Replace Your Pod

  • Burnt or muted flavor — The most common sign. If your mango tastes like cardboard, the coil is done.
  • Reduced vapor production — Noticeably thinner clouds than when the pod was new.
  • Gurgling or spitting — The coil is flooded or degraded.
  • Dark, discolored e-liquid — Old juice and residue building up inside the pod.
  • Most pods last 5-10 refills or 1-2 weeks of regular use, whichever comes first.

    Keeping It Clean

  • Wipe the contacts — Use a cotton swab or tissue to clean the metal contact points between the pod and battery. Juice leaks here and causes connection issues.
  • Clear the mouthpiece — Roll a tissue corner and push it through the mouthpiece to remove condensation buildup.
  • Don't overfill — Fill to the max line, not above it. Overfilling causes leaks and gurgling.
  • Tank and Coil Maintenance (Box Mods)

    When to Change Your Coil

A coil typically lasts 1-3 weeks depending on how much you vape and what wattage you use. Change it when:

  • The flavor is muted, off, or burnt
  • You see dark residue on the cotton through the juice ports
  • The coil looks gunked up when you remove it
  • Vapor production drops significantly
  • How to Prime a New Coil

Skipping this step is the #1 reason people burn out a brand new coil.

  • Drip e-liquid onto the cotton — Look at the juice ports (small holes on the side of the coil). Apply 3-4 drops of e-liquid directly onto the visible cotton.
  • Saturate the top — Put a few drops down the center of the coil head too.
  • Install and fill the tank — Screw the coil in, fill the tank, and let it sit for **5-10 minutes** before vaping.
  • Start at low wattage — Take the first few puffs at a lower wattage than recommended, then gradually increase.
  • Cleaning Your Tank

Do this every time you change coils or switch flavors:

  • Disassemble — Remove the coil, glass, and o-rings
  • Rinse everything in warm water (not hot — it warps o-rings)
  • Let it air dry completely on a paper towel
  • Reassemble with a new coil
  • For a deeper clean, soak the tank parts in unflavored vodka or isopropyl alcohol for 30 minutes, then rinse with warm water and dry thoroughly.

    Troubleshooting Common Problems

    "My vape tastes burnt"

Cause: Burnt coil, dry cotton, or wattage too high.

Fix: Replace the coil. If it's new, you probably didn't prime it — see above. Also check that your wattage is within the range printed on the coil.

    "My vape is leaking"

Cause: Overfilled tank, worn o-rings, cracked glass, or loose assembly.

Fix: Check all seals and o-rings. Make sure the coil is finger-tight (not forced). Replace cracked glass. Don't overfill.

    "I'm not getting flavor"

Cause: Old coil, vaper's tongue (flavor fatigue), or wrong wattage.

Fix: Try a new coil first. If everything's fresh, try a different flavor — your taste buds can adapt to one flavor and stop noticing it. Also make sure your wattage matches the coil's recommended range.

    "My battery dies too fast"

Cause: High wattage, old battery, cold weather, or chain vaping.

Fix: Lower your wattage. If you're using external batteries, replace them every 6-12 months. In cold weather, keep the device in an inner pocket. Avoid chain vaping (constant back-to-back puffs) which drains the battery fastest.

Tips to Make Your Device Last

  • Store upright — Prevents leaking and keeps juice evenly distributed
  • Keep it clean — A weekly wipe-down prevents buildup
  • Don't over-tighten — Finger-tight is enough. Over-tightening strips threads
  • Use the right charger — USB-C cable that came with the device is best. Avoid fast chargers meant for phones
  • Don't let the tank run dry — Vaping an empty tank burns the coil instantly
  • Keep it out of extreme heat — Don't leave it in a hot car. Heat degrades batteries and thins e-liquid
